Project Planning Guide

Build the packaging brief around the real product.

A package must communicate clearly and reproduce correctly on its actual material and shape. Gather the practical information before approving the artwork.

Planning step 1

Confirm the container or dieline

Use the approved supplier template and verified dimensions. Identify seams, folds, safe areas and any surface limitations.

Planning step 2

Organize approved content

Separate product name, variant, use information, required statements and supporting copy. Have the client’s qualified reviewers approve regulated or technical language.

Planning step 3

Plan the product family

Decide what stays consistent across the range and how size, variant or formulation differences will be identified.

Planning step 4

Design at actual scale

Review legibility, hierarchy and contrast at the final size. Consider both physical handling and how the package appears in product photography.

Planning step 5

Review production proofs

Confirm version, dimensions, colors, barcode handling and supplier requirements before release. A screen preview is not a substitute for the agreed production proof.

Your preparation checklist

Bring these details into the brief.

  • Approved dieline and measurements
  • Final product and variant names
  • Client-approved technical and required copy
  • Barcode and identifier requirements
  • Material, finish and use conditions
  • Proof and release authority

Common pitfalls

What to avoid.

Designing around temporary copy

Late content changes can upset both hierarchy and physical fit.

Ignoring the product family

A single label may look good while the range feels unrelated.

Assuming design equals compliance

Artwork support does not replace qualified technical or legal review.

Questions & answers

A few useful details before we start.

Should we use a mockup to approve the design?

A mockup can help visualize the concept, but the actual-size artwork and production proof must also be reviewed.

Can existing labels be refreshed?

Yes. Start with an inventory of the current formats, content and production constraints.
